Choral music is a real strength both in our worship and leisure. St Nicolas’ has a robed, mixed, RSCM-affiliated choir which sings at St Nicolas’ Sunday morning Holy Communion services throughout the year, including all Sundays during the summer months. They also visit St Anne’s on the fourth Sunday of each Month to sing the traditional service of Choral Matins.
St Nicolas and St Anne’s are both popular venues for couples planning on getting married and the choir sings at several wedding services in the church each year.
Music in a variety of styles and from around the world is sung either with the support of the pipe organ, Yamaha grand-piano or unaccompanied, but the English choral tradition remains central to music-making at St Nicolas. There are over 130 anthems in the choir’s constantly expanding repertoire. Notable additions in recent years have included the singing of the Fauré and the Brahms Requiem on Good Fridays. All singers regularly have the opportunity to sing solos of all kinds if they wish, and some of our younger singers have recently gone on to gain choral scholarships and to sing elsewhere.

The choir is often augmented at Festivals and celebratory services by voluntary visiting singers. In addition and one of the regular musical and social highlights for the choir has been the singing of Choral Services at UK Cathedrals; 12 visits over the last 14 years, most recently at Salisbury and Worcester. You can hear the Sunday morning Eucharist service from Gloucester by clicking this link.
In August, 2025 the choir sang the weekend Services at Bristol Cathedral.
