As a church community, we are committed to raising money for those less fortunate than ourselves as well as continuing to work hard to balance our own books. This year, we are nominating a different charity to support each month. We have a box at the back of church for cash donations and you can use the card reader in church to make your donation too.
During August, we have been collecting for Thrive and we will record the total raised here very soon.
For September, we turn our attention to MacMillan Cancer Care. You’ll have heard the MacMillan slogan many times before … “Cancer isn’t going anywhere. And neither are we. But we can’t do it without you.”
There’s around 3 million people living with cancer in the UK today, and more than 360,000 are diagnosed every year. Right now, millions of people living with cancer are counting on MacMillan for help with paying bills, going through treatment, or with how they’re feeling. 97% of MacMillan’s work is funded by ordinary people – individuals, churches and other community groups who donate and raise money for this important cancer charity. During the course of 2023 MacMillan estimate that they reached some 2.3million people. They helped to secure millions in benefits through the advice provided by the Macmillan Support Line and £310 million through local Welfare Rights Services.
Meanwhile Macmillan nurses, support workers and palliative care nurses reached approximately 730,000 people living with cancer in 2023, supporting them and their families. Maybe you have experienced the support of MacMillan amongst your own family and friends and know what a difference they make.
In addition to our collection, this month we will also be holding a coffee morning for MacMillan Cancer Care. It’s on Friday 27th September. More information about this soon….
Please put your donation for this important cause into the Charity box at the back of church or use the card reader recording the date and amount on the adjacent card. Thank you.
During August, we collected for Thrive: the gardening for health charity which uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable’. We will record the total sum raised shortly.
In July, we supported the work of Rennie Grove Hospice Care. The work of this local charity is well-known to at least one member of our congregation and we were able to send a donation of £212 to the charity.
In June, we supported a local charity committed to providing support for families with children with life-limiting illnesses called Sebastian’s Action Trust. We were able to send a donation of £210.
In May we were able to send Christian Aid £165 to support the amazing work they have been doing around the world over the last 75 years.
Our April charity was Thames Hospice which has been serving the community of East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire for more than 36 years. Thames Hospice works in partnership with local healthcare colleagues to provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care services to people aged 16 and over in their own homes and within the Hospice. It delivers care that is agile and responsive, giving patients and their families choices about the care they receive, supporting the physical, social and psychological needs of patients and their loved ones. Thames Hospice receives a 26% financial contribution towards their operating costs funded by NHS England and need to raise over £38,000 each day to fund services 365 days a year to the people who need them most. Letter from Thames Hospice: “I am writing to share our thanks for the generous donation we received of £152 from the Church of St Nicholas Taplow. £152 could fund a Nurse at Thames Hospice for 7 hours, making a real difference to the care we can offer our patients. We wouldn’t be able to offer our services without the support of our lovely community; heartfelt thanks once again for supporting us”.
Our March Charity Appeal: This began on Sunday, 3rd March with a jam and cake sale which raised £320 for Transform Trade which is a global community of farmers, workers, collectives, campaigners, donors and supporters who work together for trade that values people over profit. The money we raise will go to help women in Bangladesh to set up and run community shops so they can buy household essentials locally rather than travelling 10km to the local market. Our February Charity Appeal was for USPG (United Society for Partners in the Gospel working with churches worldwide in God’s mission to enliven faith, strengthen relationships, unlock potential and champion justice. USPG has three strategic aims: Rethinking Mission, Energising Church and Championing Justice. We raised £142 for this cause during the month.
Our First Charity Appeal this year was for our own Taplow for Ukraine campaign: we supported Maidenhead URC work in sending another lorryload of items to Ukraine for those in need. There was also the opportunity to donate money which is badly needed there.
